"Just took my '73 Les Paul Deluxe out for its first gig in years, and I found a long, lost friend.
This was my main guitar back in the 70's. After some well-meaning customization (brass hardware and rewiring) that probably did more harm than good, I lost interest in the LP sound, and have been playing several Fenders since the early eighties. In the 90's, I set out to restore the Paul. Over the years since then, I've changed pickups, tuners, bridges, pots, nuts, and had the frets dressed. Although the sound was "OK", the guitar never felt right to me, so it stayed in its case most ot the time.
In the last several weeks, Michael Douglas worked his mad magic on my old friend - a refret with jumbo wire. This was a much more difficult job than either of us expected, since the old rosewood board was brittle and the old frets had been superglued in place. Michael had to painstakingly patch and fill several areas that crumbled when the old frets were removed. And, being the consumate perfectionist, Micheal was not happy until all the patches were just right. Installing the new frets, definitely the easy part of the job, was done last week and I picked my baby up a few days before the gig. Beautiful.
Being much more comfortable with strats for years, I expected to use the Paul for a handful of songs at the gig. As it turned out, I hardly touched the strats. The feel, response, and sound of the Les Paul was too good and too familiar to let go. It plays just like it did years ago, except somehow even better than before. It's my new number one. Sorry, Leo.

"Hey Michael, I hope you had a nice weekend. I just had to tell you how happy I am with my Strat. It's just a totally different guitar now. It played like a charm at my show Thursday, and I've been playing it at home all weekend. The intonation is finally the way it's supposed to be, and what a difference it's made here! And the sanded neck is fabulous. I now realize more than ever how much the original satin finish really sucked. The new and improved neck is almost reminiscent of my Jem, which is my fastest neck. Bottom line, the Strat finally feels and plays like a real guitar, and I look forward to playing it a lot more now. Great job, my man"!
